NOTES.
1. Three of the older NOAA weather satellites which have been
decommissioned and are tumbling freely are known to sporadically put
out
a carrier on 137.500 MHz. The satellites are TIROS-N, NOAA 6 and NOAA
9
When the relevant footprints overlap this will cause interference to
NOAA 15 when active on this frequency.
Latest report below.
01/05/09 - Report of consistent interference on NOAA 15 signal when
NOAA 9 footprint overlaps. My thanks to Steven Ross for this report.
2. NOAA 16's APT transmission system failed a few months after launch.
3. Metop-A's A-side LRPT transmitter has failed. Currently the redundant
B-side transmitter is off until further notice (No further service
expected due to interference with HIRS instrument).
4. NOAA 14 was decommissioned on 23rd May 2007.
5. NOAA 12 was decommissioned on 10th August 2007.
6. APT Channel B set to AVHRR Channel 4 and APT Channel A set to AVHRR
Channel 2.
Channel A now toggling between AVHRR Channel 2 and 3
based on ground track day/night cycles.

NOTES.

3. On Friday 19th September 2003 NOAA 16 developed AVHRR synch. problems
similar to those on NOAA 14 (and previously NOAA 15).
Since then reports have been mixed. Some periods of good data, some
poor.
UPDATE: Scan motor performance has recently improved.
4. On 25 May 2009, Eumetsat extended the coverage of the Advanced High
Resolution Picture Transmission (AHRPT) system on Eumetsat's Metop-A
polar-orbiting satellite. The improved service provides additional
coverage over the Gulf of Mexico and Indian Ocean regions.

5. Feng Yun 3A was declared operational on 12th January 2009. My thanks
to
Johnny Lin for drawing this to my attention.
I am also grateful to Dave Wright of Dartcom for confirming that
unfortunately (as usual) the Chinese have not strictly complied with
the
CGMS AHRPT Global Standard so reception using a standard Metop AHRPT
receiver is not possible.
6. Thanks to all those who sent me reports confirming problems with FY 1D.
In particular I would like to thank Nigel Atkinson of the UK Met.
office
for keeping me continually updated. The satellite is once again
imaging.

Users may observe degraded image quality for up to 6 hours after the
manoeuvre.

NOAA-19 ATOVS level 2 sounding products generated by EUMETSAT become
operational.
From this date onwards these products will be available in near real-time
via EUMETCast-Europe and the GTS-RMDCN, and in offline mode via the
EUMETSAT
Archive. Users who already receive the Metop-A ATOVS level 2 sounding
products via EUMETCast will have their accounts automatically activated to
receive the corresponding NOAA-19 products. All other EUMETCast users
wishing to receive the full suite of ATOVS products are requested to
register via the EUMETSAT User Helpdesk.

FUTURE EVENTS

Following the WMO recommendation (Note 3 to the Specification of Octet
Contents in the Manual on Codes) for the introduction of BUFR Edition 4,
EUMETSAT plans to introduce the BUFR edition 4 for the encoding of the
Meteosat-8 and Meteosat-9 BUFR products.
The BUFR Edition 4 parameter in the header shall be updated. The
meteorological products themselves shall not be impacted by this change.
Example data sets shall be made available on the EUMETSAT web pages by 2
July 2009.
