Forecast Discussion

The summits will continue to warm on the backside of the high, and winds will remain fairly calm by summit standards today, keeping temperatures and wind chills on the mild side. A large area of low pressure developing in the Gulf States will begin to trek along the eastern seaboard. In the process, a secondary low will form on the North Carolina coastline, and pass to the northeast of the forecast area during the day tomorrow. This will bring the first shot of precipitation, beginning tonight. With temperatures starting below freezing, precipitation should begin as snow. But as the vertical column warms due to southerly flow and overrunning, that will change over to rain. The primary low will continue to travel up the eastern seaboard, intensifying as it does so. By tomorrow evening the low will be situated just to our south west, with temperatures beginning to decline. This will cause messy precipitation, with the warmer air still aloft, creating freezing rain on the higher summits for some time. Looking at model soundings, the summits should be smack in the middle of the warmest slot of air for Friday into Saturday, providing what looks to be rain on the higher summits, and freezing rain in the valleys. The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Gulf Stream will provide plenty of moisture and energy, resulting in high quantities of precipitation, with precip being heavy at times.
