Officially summer is with us and locally to mark the change of season the
weather put on a demonstration. As vehicles marked their passage down the
local road with a pall of dust and the pastures and household yard now seem
covered with faded Christmas tinsel instead of the green grass, it was fair
to say that we needed rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology rainfall radar images suggested that the storm cell
was going to slither past and out to sea. As the old Brisbane area Storm
Watch nets proved time and again, local observed conditions are not
necessarily reported, even by good technology. With low level wind bringing
rain from one direction meeting the storm rain and hail aprroaching from the
opposite direction, we were left with the roar of the wind and a complete
 whiteout.

From news reports, it appears that our local school suffered the most damage
from the winds and fallen trees. Locally, our access road was closed by two
trees blasted out of the ground.

The good thing was that the antenna systems all survived. It has been a lesson
well learned from the advice of old timers and experience that when you live
in summer storm areas to engineer for expected conditions. Many people, in the
early days of CB, learned that their shiny sky hook raised to the sky on water
pipe could still be destroyed when the pipe bent or the over tightened guys
 fractured.
There is good reason to use thin walled mast and to leave sufficient slack in
the guys to allow the forced vibrations and stresses to be disappated in the
 structure.

Even the inverted V survived when a large branch was blown from the tree that
is used as a tie off point for the feedline. With our backup battery system,
the station was able to stay available for use.

I hope that your preparations have been completed and you don't have to
subject them to such a field test. Let us all enjoy the benefits of amateur
 radio this summer.
