DID YOU TELL ANYONE ABOUT AMATEUR RADIO THIS WEEK?
--------------------------------------------------

 Welcome to QNEWS from VK4WIA. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP and here's a
 thought for the New Year.

When you ride your bicycle on the road, do you automatically make way
for a person on a motor scooter? Should motor cycle riders give way to
ute's and sedans? Sounds crazy doesn't it? As a public resource, the
road is used by all kinds of vehicles with all sorts of cargoes and many
passengers. The reason that the roads are not chaotic is that every user
is obliged to adhere to common road rules. Breaking those rules may
 result in injury and death.

To join the users of the radio spectrum we can use a mobile/cell phone,
a LIPD or CB and so on. If we get smitten with the bug known as Amateur
Radio and wish to transmit, we all have to pass a licence which ensures
basic compliance with common rules. Breaking these rules may result in
annoyance to others and even injury and death.

The aether, as it was known, the radio frequency spectrum is shared and
used in a common way around the world of amateur radio. Titles and
honorifics, status and position matter not to the radio amateur. The
callsign is special in that it applies to the person and not the
equipment or craft that carries it.

There was a time in Australia that we only had what is now the Advanced
licence. For the "dummies" that couldn't or didn't want to learn Morse
Code, the Limited licence was introduced at the same technical level but
minus the CW. Now we have other grades of licence and they all permit
the holder to enjoy use of the same radio spectrum.

In our coming centenary year, can we ensure the the traditions of the
hobby don't die out. When we key the transmitter, we are communicating
with another amateur with a callsign and a name. There is no superiority
in the ranks of the hobby except in the individual's own mind.

For QNews, I'm Geoff, VK4ZPP that is what I think.
