DID YOU TELL ANYONE ABOUT AMATEUR RADIO THIS WEEK?
--------------------------------------------------
april 18
Welcome to QNews from VK4WIA. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP and I've been thinking.
Today is World Amateur Radio Day, as we learned from WIA National News last
week. Every year this seems to be an event which comes like a
Jack-in-the-Box with announcements just before the event.
It would be great if we could use this international recognition to promote
our club, our hobby in our local communities.
As has been announced in WIA National News, last week, the Institute has
made available a press release kit to those clubs hosting VK100WIA operations
This kit is also available to other clubs on request.
We may have missed the boat, a little, on this year's World Amateur Radio Day
but we should have no reason not to make a public splash next year.
In keeping with the spirit of digital developments in amateur radio, this
broadcast has been prepared, collated and edited on many digital devices, my
home PC included.
I'm Geoff Emery and that's what I think.....what about you?
CLUBBING -
GYMPIE
www.gceginc.org.au
Trevor Taege, VK4BAT
I’m Trevor Taege, VK4BAT with the news from the Gympie Communications &
Electronics Group:
Two new members have been accepted into the Club so we extend a warm welcome
from all the Gympie Group members to Graeme VK4SG and Nathan. We look
forward to having you both along to meetings and other Club activities.
Work is continuing on the relocation of the 2m repeater with the first of
two 80 watt solar panels being delivered. The second panel and the regulator
are on order. Also completed is the APRS unit that will report the battery
voltage and shack temperature of the repeater installation. The ident will
change from VK4RCM to VK4RGY as it moves to Mt. Boulder. We anticipate this
to happen within about a month unless a problem is encountered with the solar
power testing phase.
Do you remember Jeff Johnson VK4XJJ who walked across Australia from south
to north, Gulf to Gulf? He had a daily sked with Roger VK4BNQ on 40m and
made several sat-phone radio interviews with ABC radio and our own WIA
news producer Graham VK4BB. Well Jeff has another little walk planned but
this time it is from east to west, right across Australia! The Royal Flying
Doctor Service has approached Jeff to complete this huge fund-raising walk
on their behalf. They will be providing support along the way and the
Gympie Communications & Electronics Group will be Jeff’s official East Coast
Amateur Radio contact station. The walk is being planned to commence early
April 2011. With anticipated radio and TV coverage, ‘Jeff’s Walk’ will once
again raise money and awareness for a good cause and help to promote and
demonstrate Amateur Radio. More information to follow in our next club news
segment.
For Gympie Area News, I’m Trevor Taege, VK4BAT.
Redcliffe and District Radio Club
www.redclifferadioclub.org.au/
I'm Ray VK4CF back with news from the Redcliffe AR Club".
Club members worked at the repeater site last Sunday and carried out the
following work, Removing the faulty 2m/70cm dual band vertical antenna,
Fitting a new RFI high gain UHF antenna, a new RFI diplexer for the 2m
repeater, new LDF4-50 feedlines, new 2 metre and 70cm repeaters and
undertook general maintenance around the site.
This work was carried out with thunderstorms in the distance and very
persistence rain at the site. Thanks to Mrs Hufnagle who provided (warm)
muffins for the workers on the hill and to Charlie(VK4YZ) and John (VK4YJV)
for spending time in the harnesses up the tower once again.
Please note, to all those who use the Redcliffe repeater that the repeater
tail is now 0.5 of a second long. This is intentional.
The new repeater equipment has been funded by the Gaming Commission Grants.
Soon work will commence on the fabrication of a working platform on the tower
that will also be used to hold solar panels.
Tech Talks are held at the club house on the third Monday of the month with
David VK4DC on homebrew Antenna Tuner next Monday night. In August,
Kevin VK4UH to talk on the Expedition Trip to Norfolk Island that is a
feature article in this month’s AR magazine.
On May 17th, there is to be a visit by club members to Air Services Australia
at Brisbane Airport Control tower. Numbers for this event are limited to a
maximum of 24 persons. So please ensure you advise Scottie, VK4FLAE, as
soon as possible your intention to attend.
WIA Club Grant 2009 will be used to purchase VK3YNG sniffers and Charlie
VK4YZ is to head up the antenna construction team. The club will also
apply for the 2010 WIA Club Grant to purchase a 23cm ATV transmitter kit
from Minikits. The ATV transmitter would be used to broadcast tech talks
live to the Oceanview ATV repeater and to develop a mini-studio at the
clubhouse.
The club will apply to the WIA to use the callsign VK100WIA, from Aug 30 to
Sept 1. The call sign will be operated from the clubhouse during this period.
John VK4WX and XYL Beryl will be absent from the club for about 2 years or
until the money runs out on his trip around Australia. John will be on or
about 7.070 MHz at nominally 1630 on Saturdays to keep in contact with
absent friends.
So until next week, for Redcliffe club I'm Ray VK4CF.
