Dave,
Why tell the truth when a lie has much more impact. I invited you to go
somewhere else because you breached the security of my BBS twice, nothing
more, nothing less. I don't give a rats about you giving Bob your
packet.ini file but I do care about you providing him with your logon
information, and you posting my logon information for the world to see.
Further, I don't care if you don't see that as a breach of security. I do,
and I'm the person who has to restore a compromised system. I expect my
users to accept that telnet access is a priviledge, not a right and I
expect them to consider the security of the system on which they are a
guest. I also don't care about how other sysops view their security. What
they do is their business.

Over strong ideas about security? Dave, you have no idea. Go on the www
and google on telnet+security. Most system administrators don't allow any
telnet access because it is a known and confirmed security risk, even when
some careless user hasn't posted logon information for the world to see.
The preceding is pure fact. The telnet port may be just for the BBS but,
being on the www, it is open to every clown on the internet who wants to
inflict malicious damage on other systems. Port scanners to find open
ports are a dime a dozen (my Linux system has at least 6 available for
installation) and password cracking programs (at least 6 of those as well)
are just as cheap. I've said most of this in a previous bulletin.

Helpful? Let's see, I gave you telnet access until you shot yourself in
the foot. There's thirteen years of 24/7 bbs operations for any licenced
amateur to use via radio. Let's see, I bought the radios (for 6 radio
ports) for others to use, the TNC's, the modems, the computers. I paid for
the electricity to run it all. I did all this to help others, but just
because I value the security of my system when you so obviously don't, you
infer that I'm unhelpful. I'd call that ungrateful selfishness.
FWIW, I tried to help Bob but he thwarted my attempts at a structured
investigation by going off at tangents, thereby stuffing my attempts to
help, and by consistantly refusing to supply the information others had
requested. He continually maintained there was nothing wrong with his
system, because he said so, despite the evidence suggesting otherwise. Bob
has a strong reputation for knowing everything and always being right,
even when he's wrong.
Dave, your bulletin is nothing but sour grapes because you were challenged
for an action I found unacceptable. You may remember that after you posted
my logon information for the world to see, I sent you an email in protest.
You then capped it off by passing on your logon information to someone
else.
I can live with what I did and I don't really care what you or others
might think of it.
My system is still available 24/7 via radio for all licenced amateurs, and
that includes you.
