"Beef tea
Remove all fat and skin from 1/2 pound of gravy beef, shred finely with
two forks. Put meat into a jar with 1/2 pint of cold water and 1/2
teaspoon of salt. Allow to stand for 20 minutes. Stand jar in a saucepan
of water and heat gently. Cook 30 minutes. Strain and serve very hot."
From my mother's old New Zealand cookery book (1956 edition), printed by a
maker of baking powder, custard powder, cornflour and jelly crystals.
