Coming late into this topic here are some my experiences of tea.

Many years ago when I worked in a railway signal box I often had a brew
from the engine crews tea can. It was a white (?) enamelled tin can
holding about two pints of liquid with a lid that took off all the skin
from your lips if that cup was used too hot . There was a method of
making this tea to a well known pattern something like this.

Empty out yesterdays cold dregs. Rinse out can, or don't if it is
reasonably clear of old tea leaves. Put in two dessert spoons of loose
tea, or to taste. Fill to the brim with boiling water straight out of
  the engine boiler.

Place can on shelf above fire door and forget about it for a few
minutes. Thirty seemed about right in those days. By then the tea could
be used as a fence paint, or diluted and drank. About 1 part tea to 7
parts hot water was usual and it was then sweetened and milk put in, to
suit. I've certainly had some 'interesting' brews once the tea had
  'mashed'.

We in North Lincolnshire also used the term 'mashed' as well as the
folks in Sheffield. Someone asked if tea strainers can still be bought.
Certainly they can in this area, either plastic or metal mesh. If tea
is mashed and poured correctly there is no need for a tea strainer.
They are for cissies. Regards and....

Why isn't food in supermarkets in the same place two weeks running?
